This Space of Mine

Phoebe Boswell, Christopher Kane, Rejina Pyo, and other creative Londoners share the spaces that inspire them for This Space of Mine presented by Whitechapel Gallery and A Vibe Called Tech.

This Space of Mine, is a film, photography and written project inspired by the studio in its myriad forms. In celebration of Whitechapel Gallery’s major exhibition, A Century of the Artist’s Studio: 1920-2020, A Vibe Called Tech brought together creative Londoners including Phoebe Boswell, Christopher Kane, and Rejina Pyo to share the spaces and materials that shape their work.

The first films and photography to be released put a spotlight on Antony Gormley’s light-filled drawing studio in King’s Cross, artist Phoebe Boswell’s cosy Bow Arts workshop and Rejina Pyo’s creative environment. Gormley’s studio is described as a playground, or laboratory, where silence, light, and space are integral to creation. Boswell’s buzzing studio space is home to several other artists and her work takes place amongst stacks of books, works-in-progress, and her trusty animation table. Rejina Pyo, renowned for her sumptuous and unexpected use of colour, describes natural light as essential to her practice but accords greater status to her notebooks which accompany her constantly, as a space to scribble and download ideas.

Championing artistry in all its guises, This Space of Mine brings together artists, designers, chefs, choreographers, and more in celebration of the studio in all forms, from school buildings to a chef’s kitchen, a garden, and garage. The series also features artist Jasmin Bhanji, fashion designer Christopher Kane, Townsend’s New Head Chef Chris Shaw, and artist and curator Joe Moran
